Our
Cultural Rugby Experience
The objective of this diary is
to share the cultural and rugby experience between a rugby family in
Ottawa, Paul & Linda Cunningham, and their summer guest, 19-year old
Alexis Glasgow from St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Regular updates will be
provided so all can share in this exchange from many perspectives.

July 20th –
August 29th, 2004
The last month has again been
filled with lots of rugby for Lex – from playing at the Club U19 game
(group photo on website with some of this gang!), 2nd Div
Russell (She wooed them all with both offense and defense in the League
Final August 29th – continued her average of one try per game!)
and Rep. The focus this last month has indeed been the rep play, as she
played with the “best of Eastern Ontario” at Ontario Summer Games. After a
hard week-end of a round robin tournament, Lex was deemed the “MVP for
Eastern”, which is a true honor coming from the rest of Ontario. She was
relentless in her defense (since the Eastern team played mostly defense at
this tourney!) and the joy of watching her evolve into a defensively
dependable player, yet an offensively creative one, has been a true joy.
She played the majority of her games at Center, but did have the
opportunity to try Flanker and even Scrum Half!!!! The Irish held a small
get-together for her and other departing players after Sunday’s Russell
win over the Banshees. Serving out cake, Lex held an Eastern jersey
proudly under her arm and although appearing unemotional, it was obvious
to all Lex was thrilled with her Green & Gold rugby experience!
Socially, Lex survived Irish
Day, a pub crawl or 2 and Dani’s 18th birthday with the “Leah &
Dani Show”. A few trips to Toronto, a huge journey to both PEI and London
Ontario for Ontario Summer Games – let’s just say it is no wonder she is
suffering from a few sore muscles & joints. She is spending her last week
in Ottawa being a “tourist” with her close friend Dani. It has been quite
a summer with Lex and we hope she takes her newly honed rugby skills back
home to convince others that the game of 15’s has merit! Hope to be
visiting you one winter real soon Alexis – it has been fun!!
