During the same week as the St. Vincent Rugby Football
Union was admitted into the International Rugby Union (IRB) as a full
member, the team had a two-win victory over St. Lucia. The
double-header was held in St. Vincent in May 2003.
The St. Vincent Rugby Union proved that they deserve the
full IRB membership during a two-day match with St. Lucia. The team, lead
by Philip Alvis, made an impressive show on Friday at the Sion Hill
playing field by defeating their much bigger opponents in the game. The
St. Lucian visitors leapt to a handy lead in the first quarter and lead
25-15 at half. However, Alvis led from the front as they started the
second half, proving that the team is force to be reckoned with. The
home team came out victorious , 43-38, at with two exceptional tries in
the dying minutes of the match. The second game was played on
Saturday at the North Union playing field, where a crowd of supporter
showed their support. This time it was a complete effort by the
young Vincentians to take the game with a 50-34 victory, once again making
themselves and their country proud. |
